Life insurance, precautionary saving and contingent bequest

چکیده

We present a model of life-insurance purchase that takes into account the age of the beneficiary. The beneficiaries considered herein are young children with no resources whose consumption needs are protected by purchasing life insurance if the breadwinner dies. We show that income transfer grows as the child ages; however, the size of contingent bequest shrinks because the need for protection diminishes. Consequently, among the beneficiaries, the younger one would receive a larger bequest. The aggregate demand for life insurance is positively related to the number of children, their consumption needs, and the length of time to independence. JEL classification: G22, D91

Incidental Bequests: Bequest Motives and the Choice to Self-Insure Late-Life Risks∗

Retirees face significant uncertainty about how long they will live and, in many countries, how much costly health care they will require. Yet few buy life annuities or long-term care insurance to insure these risks. Low rates of long-term care insurance coverage are often interpreted as evidence against the importance of bequest motives since failing to buy insurance exposes bequests to signif...

The Importance of Bequest Motives: Evidence from Long-term Care Insurance and the Pattern of Saving∗

Many households spend their wealth slowly during retirement, holding much of their wealth into old age. Determining why they do so is made difficult by a fundamental identification problem: retirees’ saving decisions reflect the combined strength of precautionary and bequest motives. Given the substantial medical spending and mortality risks that retirees face, savings are spent primarily on pr...

The Importance of Bequests and Life-Cycle Saving in Capital Accumulation: A New Answer

As the workhorse of consumption and saving research for the past four decades, the life-cycle model has proved flexible and useful for examining a variety of questions. In a classic paper, Albert Ando and Franco Modigliani (1963 p. 56) stated a key assumption of the basic model: “[t]he individual neither expects to receive nor desires to leave any inheritance.” Although the authors contended th...

The impact of the correlation between health expenditure and survival probability on the demand for insurance

This paper studies the effects of health shocks on the demand for health insurance and annuities, along with precautionary saving in a dynamic life-cycle model. I argue that when the health shock can simultaneously increase health expenses and reduce longevity, rational agents would neither fully insure their uncertain health expenses nor fully annuitize their wealth because the correlation bet...

Bequest motives in a life-cycle model with intergenerational interactions

This paper revisits the debate on altruism vs exchange motive for bequest and studies to what extent the saving behavior of elderly Europeans is di↵erent in the presence or absence of adult children. To this purpose, we develop a structural model with two overlapping generations, namely elderly parents and their adult children. For each generation, we formulate a separate lifecycle model in whi...
